Originally built in 1851, and designed by the esteemed architect and inventor, Joseph Aloysius Hansom, Mount St Mary’s offers one of the most striking examples of Gothic Revival in the UK today. In the same year, Mount Saint Mary’s School was founded next door in the same style.
Defined by steep gabled roofs, pointed arches, stained-glass windows, flying buttresses, ribbed vaults, and spires, this stunning architecture can be seen in the some of worlds most famous landmarks that include the Houses of Parliament and London’s Tower Bridge.
For nearly 140 years Mount St Mary’s formed a key part of the local community and its contributions are considered unmeasurable. Sadly, due to a shrinking parish population, in June 1989, Mount St Mary’s was sadly closed. The church was handed over to the Diocese of Leeds and named a heritage building by the Victorian Society.
In 2023, Mount St Mary’s and all its grandeur, will be brought back to life as it transformed into a truly stunning residential community.
